Bill Maher, Misogyny, and Petitioning His Exit

HBO’s ‘Real Time’ host Bill Maher is at it again. He holds back no punches with his sexist and highly offensive epithets directed towards women.

On March 28, 2011, Bill Maher, as a guest at Winspear Opera House, referred to Sarah Palin as the ‘c-word’.

On his Friday show, he called Sarah Palin and Michelle Bachman “bimbos.”

A week earlier, he called Palin a “dumb t..t.”

And this vulgarity is not directed only at conservative women; in 2008, his verbal attacks were focused on Hillary Clinton, referring to the then US sitting Senator and former First Lady’s “c-word,” and the price that could be paid for it. Below is the video wherein he discusses the price of Hillary Clinton’s privates:

Because he is employed by Time Warner Inc.’s HBO, and because he is considered a satirist and comedian, he is given license to denigrate women with his verbal tirades. But in light of his slurs on both conservative and liberal women, his vulgarity shows that he is nothing more than a misogynist and a simpleton, who reduces the art of satire to common name-calling. There is nothing informed or educated or satirical about calling women vulgar epithets, no matter how much you disagree with their politics.

His behavior is childish, lewd, and disgraceful, and he should be removed from public venues like HBO, which only reinforce bad behavior and misogynistic rhetoric by keeping him on. Sign the petition started by The New Agenda’s Amy Siskind to have him removed from the show, as it gives him license in encouraging sexism and rewards him with profit for perpetuating sexist attitudes towards all women.

His epithets are not targeted at any other group, and this demonstrates his lack of respect for women and girls. If Bill Maher’s vulgarities were addressed to any other group, there would be an uprising. We need to stop this now, so that our daughters can have a bright and equal future that is not fraught with misogynistic and debased attitudes toward them.

Please, for the sake of all women and the future of all our girls, let’s drive the message that this kind of attitude towards women is unacceptable.

Pass the online petition along, sign it, Facebook it, Twitter it, and Blog about it. We all need to work together.

I am also sick and tired of hearing Bill Maher critisizing Christianity every chance he gets and the media lets him get away with it. He is a first class Jerk and a Moron.
Since he is an atheist and anti-religion, he should also critisize Judaism but he doesn’t dare. Better yet, he should critisize Islam; perhaps the Muslims will then kill him and rid the earth of this parasite.

    • Thank you, Frederick, for taking the time to comment on this. Maher reminds me of a little boy trying very hard to stand out — but doing it in an immature way. He thinks funny is calling people names — and it isn’t. He’s not that informed and intelligent when he simply uses slurs to get his points across. His public voice needs to be revoked.

The sad thing is that he has been doing this since the 80′s, right? And he aint no Spring Chicken! His immaturity stands out now more than ever, far overshadowing any acuity on world issues.
No, this is something that has been going on since his days as a stand-up. Its nothing new, but has always been highly objectionable for those who respect women. He coats the nastiness of using women as the butt of ugly jokes by his delivery of a sort of left-radicalism and being the master of insults (aka a brand of humor). Im glad others have started noticing what a pathetic little whiner he really is.

        • Bravo, Amanda! The New Agenda acquired over one thousand signatures for the petition, but the board has yet to say a word about Maher and his behavior. We shall see what happens. I think the only way he’ll be ousted is if we boycott HBO…

You and I usually agree on so much, but I have to say I am a big fan of Bill Maher. I had not really noticed his misogynistic comments to the extreme because he does call plenty of male politicians douchebags, a**holes, etc. “Teabaggers” is a term that is gender-neutral for him.

From what I have seen, he is very, very supportive of public policies that advance the position of women and work in the best interests of families. I always tune into his show and I have seen him advocate loud and proud for the healthcare legislation, equal pay for women, respect for women’s right to choose. He has reviled and called out “scumbags” for lewd behavior toward children and rapists. He’s famously known to appreciate the company of women in a way that is mature and non-hypocritical.

So, I have found him to be very much a woman’s advocate in that way. He may slander some, but he slanders men just as well. Frankly, I’m more offended by the politicians who do not say these words, but degrade women in their political activities.

On the issue of religion, he is very bothered by how religious texts oppress and degrade women. I think we should be more upset that preists blindly peddle some of that literature than what Bill Maher says about it.

It’s so interesting that everyone has different perceptions about certain people or their messages. Bill Maher is not for everyone but if it’s Friday night, 7PM, I’m doing a puzzle with my son and laughing and learning (because he does have some very informed and well-spoken guests) as I watch this show.

    • It’s OK if we disagree on things, Heather. I value you and your opinions and views. You make valid points on Maher, I just have never seen anything interesting about him. But it’s good to know that he advocates for some women issues.

Interesting guests? Occasionally, but sometimes the token Conservative is there to serve as a scapegoat of withering sarcasm, the other guests may or may not be totally coked to the max. Last time I watched he had guests that tried to talk about fracking. Too bad they really knew nothing about the subject matter. They actually wasted a good opportunity to bring an important environmental concern to the national forefront, but completely blew it because the guests were stoned and all too impressed with themselves.
Maher’s advocacy is, I believe, smoke and cover, for his deep need to use misogynistic, negative sexually-based humor.

    Hi Marina,

I was just wondering about the closed comments on the newest post…I wanted to comment. Perhaps you see an element of ongoing discussion there on a different topic…but I must say that recently your superhero post has really stayed with me. As I reflect on it, She-Ra “Princess Of Power”, affected me more than the Disney princesses. I recently watched some of them again on YouTube. I really felt empowered by that cartoon as a girl. It will be interesting to see what happens with the new Wonder Woman series.

    • Heather, I loved She-Ra. When I was teaching HS, I got into Xena…loved her until they tried sexing her up with implied lesbian attraction towards the young girl that was her sidekick. I had a student who would begin my classes with the Amazon call…male student…it was hysterical. Maybe I’ll do a post on empowered and empowering Princesses of Power…although the whole Princess thing makes me vomit inside my mouth. It’s just so unreal.

That petition has expired :(… we need a new one. I’m sick of these attacks on women both in word & actions. If Bill Maher is such a supporter of women’s rights with his actions then he can learn to be a supporter with his words as well. When it comes to media personalities words have at least equal weight to actions. Rush Limbaugh is being trashed for his misogynistic tirade about Sandra Fluke and we (liberals) need to show that we don’t accept attacks against women depending on their political affiliation.
