Fred, Christmas Cash, and Child Consumerism

Thursday’s Media Thoughts: Fred and Christmas Cash

With close to 14 million hits on just this one YouTube, Fred’s “Christmas Cash” has become a phenomenon. I’m not sure how I feel about this kid and all the fame he has acquired since being a guest on Nickelodeon’s iCarly this past year, but this video annoys me — it only reinforces the bad messages kids receive through a kid’s show. In this video, Fred doesn’t want anything but money — and I have a problem with kids and cash and the entire teach-our-kids-to-be-consumers motif that is becoming rampant in our society and in our homes via media/television/commercials/movies/videos…and now, kids’ shows. Bad values are being taught to our children — and Fred is becoming part of the problem.

I agree! I hated it when I saw this video on Nick! My four year old daughter started singing it and told me that she wanted cash too. I had to remind her that CHristmas is not about money or gifts and the true meaning behind Christmas is the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ! Kids like Fred are uneducated and selfish. Obviously their parents never taught them the true value of Christmas!!

    • I know, Wendy! When I saw this video, I just couldn’t believe it. His voice is kind of funny, but the message is a warped one and not really appropriate for kids. Thanks for taking the time to comment. Appreciate it.
