Friday’s Featured Blog is Girl W/Pen, created by Deborah Siegel, PhD, writer, Professor, and Feminist. I found her and this great site through She Writes, another great meeting place for women writers, aspiring and published, which she also leads. The objective for Girl W/Pen is to bridge the gap between feminist discourse on gender, women, and motherhood and mainstream thoughts and considerations.
As I find myself between these two worlds, I have also discovered the fact that most mainstream women are not privy to the academic research and discoveries that are published annually regarding the roles they play in society. When I was working on my Doctorate back in NY, I came across feminist language, writers, and studies that I had never heard about when I was simply teaching High School English. Unless women are enrolled in Graduate courses or in a Women’s Studies Program, or writing about it, these studies are simply hidden to those who really should be well-versed in them since they apply to their lives as mothers, women, and productive and equal participants of society.
If you haven’t already, please check out Girl W/Pen. It’s an excellent resource for information that is relevant to our lives and interests.
