The under current of the commercialized day we have to come to celebrate as Valentine’s Day focuses on more than just hearts and roses and people feeling financially and emotionally pressured to have Valentine’s Day dates. Beneath the surface of this facile and superficial industry that serves only to make tons of money by playing on our emotions is women’s organization to end violence against women. I don’t hear anything about this in the news or the papers, but it is all over the internet if you are conscientious and concerned about the fact that women and girls are the largest group of victims worldwide.
Through She Writes, a women’s publishing press and a site where women can go to experience a community of like-minded peers through the craft of writing is hosting a V-Day writer’s movement. Write about V-Day, One Billion Rising, and our definite need to end the corruption of women’s bodies and identities today, link your blog to the site here, and join the movement that needs more attention and publicity than chocolate and expensive dinners.
Here is an inspirational video choreographed by Debbie Allen and produced by One Billion Rising. There’s an organization you can join in your area, so dance, rise, and help tell the world that women will not be victimized any longer. We will fight back.
