Thoughts on Gender and the Media: The following post was put together by a 22-year-old who began to see patterns of women and how the media portrays them in order to sell everything from lingerie to cars to sunglasses. It’s wonderful that young women are beginning to see these connections — how the media contributes in defining women as sexual objects, and as a result, contributes to “real” women’s self-image, low self-esteem, eating disorders, depression, and other common female ailments. And if you think it’s fine, you’re an adult, and it’s not affecting you, then consider the fact that girls as young as 5-18 are seeing the same things, except they lack the wisdom and know-it-all to understand the psychological implications of these images that bombard them daily. Food for thought?

GREAT video…there is what is being sold, but then what is being purchased. It’s hard to tell what is happening first. That billboard is close to my heart. I haven’t seen one that bad in L.A. — yet!
Thanks, Heather. Loved your billboard piece!
